If the three doshas are new to you, here is a simple snapshot of each — the elements they’re made from, and the qualities they’re associated with in the Ayurvedic tradition when they’re in balance. Think of it as a quick reference to keep close as you get to know your own constitution.
Vata — Air & Ether
Vata is the dosha of air and space, and it’s the primary mover of the three: the energy behind movement and communication, governing activity throughout the body and mind. When Vata is in balance, it is associated with a sense of lightness, creativity, happiness, and ease — a mind and body that feel alert and free.
Pitta — Fire & Water
Pitta is made of fire and water, and it governs transformation — the way we process and “digest” everything we take in, from the food we eat to the thoughts we think and the emotions we feel. When Pitta is in balance, it’s associated with focus and determination, with the clarity to learn and remember, and with the steady stamina to follow through on what matters to us.
Kapha — Earth & Water
Kapha is composed of earth and water — often called the “glue” that holds our structure together. It’s associated with strength, vitality, and steadiness. When Kapha is in balance, it brings a felt sense of love, warmth, comfort, and stability — within our bodies, our hearts, and our homes.
These three energies live in all of us, in our own unique proportions. Getting to know yours is the heart of Ayurvedic self-care — and a lovely first step is our Dosha Quiz, which offers a friendly read on which energies are most present in you right now. From there, you can explore each dosha in more depth across the Journal.
